Description
This strain is a host for many bacteriophages. Intriguingly, the vast majority of Thermus phages isolated in our laboratory infect the HB8 strain. HB8 lacks natural competence but can be transformed with plasmids by electroporation, albeit with rather low efficiency. In addition, T. thermophilus HB8 cells grow more slowly than HB27c cells and tend to form biofilms, which makes this strain somewhat difficult to work with.
T. thermophilus HB8 cells harbor 81 kbps pVV8 plasmid which is lacked in the published genomic assembly.
