Laboratory of Molecular Genetics of Microorganisms
Our laboratory studies how bacteriophages interact with the cells they infect. We are especially interested in how transcription is regulated in infected cells and how the various bacterial immune systems work. Our favorite model organism is the hyperthermophilic bacterium Thermus thermophilus, which we believe has been unfairly overlooked by the scientific community — and this website is our attempt to make up for that. We maintain the world's largest collection of live bacteriophages infecting T. thermophilus, an extensive collection of strains isolated from environmental samples, and a great deal of hands-on experience with both. A database of the strains and phages in our collection is coming to this site soon, so stay tuned!

New Cas9 protein from Alkalibacillus strain isolated from Ebeyty lake
In 2024 I visited the hypersaline Lake Ebeity and collected water and sediment samples there. Our student Victoria Ronchikova isolated halophilic archaea and bacteria from these samples. Among the iso…

"Strains" section
Little by little, I'm finishing up the website. It now has a Strains section, where I'm going to post a list of the strains we've isolated over the years: https://hotspringslab.ru/en/resources/strains…

"Resources" section
A new section called "Resources" has appeared on the website. In this section, I plan to post the collection of Thermus bacteriophages we have in our lab, the collection of extremophile strains we hav…

New samples from the hot springs of Kamchatka's Valley of Geysers
Our lab has a seasonal pastime: collecting water and mud from hot springs, hauling the samples back to the lab, and then fishing thermophiles and their viruses out of them. Sometimes we travel to the…
