Description
A siphovirus with a very long (~600 nm) tail. The genome contains two 6,638-bp direct terminal repeats (DTRs). The repeats encode early-expressed genes, including a phage double-ψ β-barrel RNA polymerase (phiFa_44). The DTRs also encode a set of small proteins that may function as anti-defense or host-takeover proteins.
The phage also produces plaques on the T. thermophilus HB8 lawn, albeit the PFU numbers are decreased by a few orders of magnitude and the plaques are extremely small.
